Weston - 2005

 

Weston SC  9th October



Eight Europes participated in this closely competitive open meeting at Weston Sailing Club.   Wind was a variable SW force 2 and getting the shifts right was the name of the game. There were 3 races using a triangle sausage course, each lasting 45 minutes. The day was shared with Bytes and Solos.

Race  1

The first race saw a battle between Richard Eagleton and James Eynon both getting the shifts right on the first lap.  Ian Stow caught Richard up on the run on the second lap as James opened out his lead.  At the finish the places were James, Ian and Richard.

Race 2

Sarah Butcher found her speed after a poor first race spent remembering how different a Europe is after attending the Radial open meeting on the Saturday. Sarah finished in second place after going back to the start thinking that she was OCS taking advantage of the right hand shift.  Elena Daynes had a great first beat, fighting to get to the windward mark in fourth place and continued working hard with the close competition round the rest of the course. While James extended his lead again, the racing behind was very close with Feargal Finlay, who is new to the class sailing Laura Baldwin's boat, showing good turns of speed and having a very close competition with Heather Back on the reaches. James finished first with Sarah and Richard following up.

Race 3

James once again led the fleet with his devastating speed as the wind dropped off.  Katie Mapplebeck had her best result of the day with a 2nd after working her way up from 6th at the end of the first lap. With 4 laps completed on this race the Europes found themselves at the leeward mark at the same time as the Solos arrived reaching in on port. Places changed throughout the fleet with Ian dropping from 2nd to 6th and then climbing back to 3rd.

It was great to see such close racing throughout the fleet and thanks are due to Weston SC and the race committee for a well organised event.
