South Cerney Open - 20 June 2004

Five Europes turned up for the Europe Traveller Event at South Cerney. A
brand-new clubhouse, excellent showers, free beer, a weed-free lake and some
unforecast breeze all contributed to a great day. Even the Red Arrows did a
fly-past to honour us!

In the first race Caroline Bowen took a great port flyer and sailed over the
whole fleet. As the wind dropped off, positions changed between Caroline,
Liz and Katie. Liz got messed up by a laser, giving Katie the lead, which
she held to the end thanks to the wind filling in (Katie 1st, Liz 2nd,
Caroline 3rd).

In the second race Katie was over the line, but she managed to round the end
and make it back by the first mark. The winds were shifting constantly and
kept dropping off and picking up(Katie 1st, Liz 2nd, Caroline 3rd).

After a delayed start due to a fierce storm followed by a massively shifting
wind, Katie and Caroline started on port and sailed almost to the first mark
without having to tack! Katie held a significant lead through out the race
and took 1st place overall (Katie 1st, Liz 2nd, Caroline 3rd). Ellen, who
has only just started sailing a Europe took a fourth and was awarded the
youth prize! We'll have to watch her when she finally abandons Cadets and
sails her Europe full-time!

Good luck to South Cerney with their new facilities and an especial thanks
to the Beach Mistress and her helpers! Maybe the Europe boys will turn out
with us next year and we can double the numbers!
