First class race management, force 3 - 4 winds and plenty of sunshine made the Europe National and Open Championships an event all the competitors will wish to remember for a long time to come. Hosted by Felpham Sailing Club over the weekend of 14th and 15th September and comprising 6 races, it attracted a smaller number of entrants than in previous years, but this did not detract from ensuring that throughout the fleet the competition was as keen as ever. The event was enhanced by it being run in conjunction with the OK Class Nationals. It was pleasing to note that of the 15 Europe entrants no fewer than 10 were 'boys', with one overseas entry, Roger Thorpe Ward racing under the burgee of the Cercle de la Voile du Portrieux, in Brittany. After day one the overall positions were beginning to emerge with
Chris Gill and Andrea Brewster sharing
line honours, which was to continue on Sunday. Chris
showed some phenomenal speed on all points of sailing but it was Andrea's
better starting in race 6 which managed to get her ahead. Elsewhere, Weston
SC members James Eynon, Ian
Stow and Chris Hughes, Lizzie
Vickers from Hayling Island SC and Elaine
Taylor from Dachet Water SC all showed themselves to be potential
race winners by leading the fleet at various times. However in the final
analysis it was Andrea who came first in
race 6 ahead of Chris to win overall on
count back. Thanks are due to the organising committee at Felpham for
a thoroughly well organised and enjoyable event. The winner of the Junior
Trophy was Sara Ireland from Restronguet
SC. Overall results:
