Burghfield SC 29th
September
2007 With nine visitors plus three home boats the Burghfield Southern Traveller event brought the largest number of Europes together this year with the exception of the Nationals. Unfortunately, the wind failed to show up so a day of very light wind drifting was in order. This meant that a number of the fleet gradually retired themselves throughout the day leaving only a hard core of 4 to compete the final race in which the best wind of the meeting turned up – albeit only briefly. Race 1 saw all 12 boats out on the water for the start. The light conditions, together with the course set by the Race Officer made for some interesting decisions, with a number of the competitors managing to sail themselves into some rather large looking holes. By the afternoon the fleet was reduced to 11, with only 6 completing the second race. The Race Officer was determined to allow us to make the most of the event and set another course that took the fleet over the entire lake. Katie Mapplebeck proved herself to be the master of light wind conditions, winning both of the first two races before making the most of her discard and retiring in the third race, which was won by Mike Gilson – a man most relieved that not only the winds were light but that he suffered no gear failure.
